The Apple Company was ordered to pay $ 2 million for denying its retail employees the meal breaks
The Apple Company was ordered to pay an amount of $ 2 million for denying few of its retail employees the meal breaks. The lawsuit was first filed in the year 2011 by four of the Apple’s employees who are working in San Deigo. The employees alleged that the company failed to impart them the meal breaks and also the rest breaks and even didn’t pay them in a proper and timely way. According to the California employment laws, the employer has to give all the hourly workers a thirty minutes break when the employees are working for a period of more than five hours in a day. The employer is also entitled to impart a ten minutes break for every four hours worked by the employee.
This lawsuit was started by just four former employees in the year 2011
Well this long running lawsuit in between the Apple Company and its employees has ended few days back. This lawsuit was started by just four former employees of the company in the year 2011 but later it expanded and included around 20,000 retail employees who are working in California. This case later went to the San Diego in October and recently a jury ordered the company to pay around $ 2 million in the restitution. Well this settlement has rendered around $95 to each and every employee of the company who were included in the group.
The employees were made to routinely work for a period of more than five hours without meal breaks
Looking at the amount of $ 2million, it is just a tiny fraction of around $ 42 billion which the company pulled in just the Q3 itself. Although the company claimed that it had given adequate breaks to its employees which were in accordance to the California labour code. The employees who filed the lawsuit claimed that they were made to work routinely for a period of more than five hours without the meal breaks .This is actually a clear violation of the labour laws prevailing in California.
The Apple Company was also accused for forbidding employees to communicate about the working conditions within the company
The complaint lodged by the employees actually became a kind of the clear action suit and later it included all those workers who have been affected since the year 2007.The Apple Company was also accused for not making the payments to its terminated employees and also forbidding the employees to communicate about the working conditions within the company.
There was an inclusion of around 21000 employees in this lawsuit
The company has not made any comments on the settlement of the lawsuit but all those employees who were denied the meal breaks will see the cash arriving as soon as the attorneys will get their share. The reports have suggested that there was an inclusion of around 21000 employees in this lawsuit.
