Amazon Key lets the customer’s couriers unlock the front door
So you’re expecting a delivery but need to attend office too? There’s no one at home. How do you get the package delivered safely and securely? Worry not, Amazon has announced its newest innovation – the Amazon key.
Amazon key – what is it?
This service will be allowing the delivery executives of the Amazon to open the front door of the customer’s house and put the ordered package safely inside his home. This service relies on Amazon’s new Cloud Cam and a compatible smart lock.
How does it work?
The camera is the hub which is connected to your home internet network. The camera basically speaks to the lock over a wireless protocol (Zigbee) that is utilized by many smart home devices. Let’s assume a package arrives for in-home delivery and you’re not available, the delivery executive would scan the barcode which further sends a request to Amazon’s cloud service. It authenticates the legitimacy of the request and if everything checks out fine, the cloud grants permission by transmitting data back to the camera which then starts recording. The delivery executive then gets a prompt on his/her handheld device. He/she swipes the prompt on the screen and the door opens. The delivery executives can drop off the packages and they can also relock the door with just another swipe. Once this action is performed, you will be receiving a notification that your delivery has arrived. In addition to the notification, you will also receive a short video that will show the recorded drop-off to validate that everything was done properly.
What else does it offer?
All similar in-home deliveries will be backed by Amazon’s Key Happiness guarantee. If you are not satisfied with the delivery, you can reach out to Amazon’s customer service team and they will work with you to correct the problem.
Amazon Key – compatibility
This awesome innovation is compatible with standard deadbolts mounted separately from the handle and standard doors between 1-3/8 and 2 inches in thickness. The compatible lock and Cloud Cam (Key Edition) must be on and paired in the Amazon key app and connected to your home internet network. Well, icing on the cake – you can also enable the Amazon key feature in the Alexa app (for your Alexa enabled device). Once enabled, you can simply ask “Alexa, is my front door locked?” and it will let you know the status.
Amazon Key app can also be used to allow others access to your home
In addition to the above, the Amazon Key app can also be used to allow others access to your home. You can have your friends, family, cleaners, maids etc enter your home even if you’re away. The level of access can be set per your requirement – as in, you can opt to provide permanent access, a one-time pass with a limit, or recurring access that would work at certain days and for certain period of time.
